Hopkinsville council appoints Robert Meek to represent Ward 8 after candidate interviews

Hopkinsville City Council appointed Robert Meek to fill the Ward 8 vacancy after interviewing four applicants and conducting a roll-call vote.

The council interviewed Kathy Detraz, Steve Mitchell, Tiffany Pittman and Robert Meek during the April 7 meeting. Each candidate gave an opening statement and answered questions about constituent communication, time commitments, budgeting experience and community engagement. Troy Botts moderated the interview portion and asked each candidate to limit remarks to set times.

After brief council discussion, members cast their votes by stating the name of the preferred candidate aloud; multiple council members named "Mr. Meek" during the roll call and the mayor announced, "Mr. Meek is our next Ward 8." The council then administered the oath of office: Robert Meek swore to support the constitutions and to "faithfully execute" the office.

Candidates emphasized constituent outreach and public-safety priorities in their answers. Council members complimented all four applicants and described the selection as difficult given the quality of the finalists; one council member commented that the field reflected a healthy interest in public service. No contested election was held during the meeting; the appointment fills the immediate vacancy until the next election cycle.

Meek will assume duties immediately after being sworn in. Council did not attach conditions to the appointment during the meeting.
