High-school student launches 'Pick It Up' creek cleanup; borough to help promote event

A high-school student told the Allendale council on Aug. 14 that she has started a volunteer cleanup called the "Pick It Up Project" and encouraged residents to join an Aug. 18 event at the Red Barn.
"I picked up more than 10 lbs of trash at the Celery Farm," Bella Reebec said, describing an initial small event she organized with family members. Reebec, who said she will be a senior at Northern Highlands, asked the borough to help publicize future cleanups; Council members and the Green Team chair, Mark Savastano, said they would push event details on borough social media.
Reebec also proposed exploring a residential food-compost pilot to reduce household trash weight. Council members said the borough would consider the idea but noted the current trash contract runs for at least two more years.
Earlier in the meeting council members also highlighted library programs (guided nature walk on Aug. 24, music and writing events in September) and a planned pocket-park design contest as part of downtown mural work.
Council staff said they will circulate event details and follow up on composting feasibility with DPW and administration staff.
