Student members of the Lyons Township High School Summer Reading Committee presented a student-curated summer reading list of 24 titles and described a broad engagement strategy to get more students reading over the summer.
The students said the committee used surveys, lunchtime interviews, social-media polling and genre analysis to narrow hundreds of suggestions to a balanced list of 24 titles. The student presenter described daily social posts, student reviews and a planned hype video to promote the list and said the committee has placed posters with QR codes in local businesses such as Starbucks and Mariano's to drive awareness.
The students identified their Instagram handle as "LT summer read," said their account has attracted more than 200 followers and described a successful giveaway used last year to boost engagement. The board praised the students for centering student voice: "We're seeing a live example of that here tonight," one board member said, commending the committee's outreach and flexibility.
The students said they will collaborate with school and public librarians to distribute the list, and teachers will be able to reference the list in classroom and library settings.
