Lake Central board lauds students for state-level music and athletics achievements

At its April 7 meeting the Lake Central School Corporation honored music and athletic teams for state-level competition results, including an eighth-grade band gold-with-distinction, two choir soloists advancing at state, and multiple swimmers and gymnasts who set records or placed at state.
Members of the Lake Central School Corporation board opened their April 7 meeting by recognizing dozens of students who advanced to or placed in state competitions in music and winter sports.
"It is my honor tonight to present two special achievements from our students," Dr. Barraco said as the board invited students and staff to the front of the room to be congratulated. He introduced band and choir directors and athletic coaches who detailed student accomplishments.
Caylor band director Leda Cena Lopez told the board the eighth-grade band received a gold-with-distinction rating at the ISMA state competition and the seventh-grade band earned a gold rating. Choir director Courtney Palace said nearly 40 students competed in district solo and ensemble contests; two seventh graders advanced to the highest state level, where Aleah Seegers received a silver solo rating and Liliana Tortorello earned a gold solo rating.
From athletics, Mr. Enyart of the athletics department read lists of athletes who qualified for state in gymnastics and wrestling. The high school gymnastics team advanced through sectionals and regionals and finished seventh at state; named athletes included Gabrielle Arroyo, Summer Bandic and others. In boys wrestling, Cruz Oreta finished sixth at 113 pounds.
Coach Kolinsky highlighted the swim team: freshman Abby Campbell placed ninth in the 200 individual medley and 10th in the 500 free at state, swam on a 400 free relay, and set new school records in the 200 IM and 100 breast. Ben Billingsley was noted as a conference champion in multiple freestyle events and as a member of winning relay teams that took sectional titles.
Coach Fowler recognized the girls wrestling program and noted a first-year wrestler, Jasmine, reached the state tournament and the team finished seventh.
Board members and parents cheered the students. The board then resumed routine business, thanking parents for attending before moving on to policy and personnel items.
