Commission approves public-safety equipment funding and several staffing actions

The Williams County commission approved two funding requests from the Public Safety Grant Committee and several personnel actions at its April 7 meeting.
The sheriff requested $15,891 to purchase a portable training-munitions facility (movable walls for live-fire training and other training equipment) and $28,600 to update graphics on an additional 26 patrol vehicles; the board approved both requests and authorized the chair to sign necessary paperwork.
Department head Helen asked to refill three positions (equipment operator/truck driver, patrol corporal and a mechanic). The mechanic position had been budgeted as part-time; staff requested converting it to full-time to internalize vehicle oil changes and maintenance previously done externally. The board approved filling the positions and the conversion to a full-time mechanic. Helen said the mechanic’s forthcoming retirement ("Dean") prompted the staffing change and that converting the role is expected to save money over time though the immediate-year budget timing will require monitoring.
A special-event permit that had been issued administratively by the clerk was ratified by the board on the consent agenda. The board also discussed but did not finalize a pending lease with the MT Saddle Club and Williston High School Rodeo Club; the lease remained under review by the Saddle Club.
