Limestone County Commission approves $5.69 million in claims, Byrne grant for 25 body cameras and a package of routine contracts and staffing changes

The Limestone County Commission met April 6 and, by unanimous voice votes, approved a slate of routine financial and operational items including $5,686,700.30 in claims, several contracts and a grant application to buy 25 body cameras for corrections staff.
The commission voted to apply for Byrne Memorial Justice Grant funding to acquire 25 body cameras, a package it said requires no county match and totals $97,523.50. The chair interjected lightheartedly during that agenda item: “Everybody want free money,” after which the motion passed without opposition.
Other actions approved without discussion included a purchase-and-sale agreement for property at 300 Elm Street with Soul Company; a one-year $5,139 service renewal with Rapid Scan System for the courthouse X-ray machine; a 60-month postage lease with Pitney Bowes for the Clinton Street Courthouse Annex; and an agreement with Athens Main Street for a courthouse-lawn renovation. The commission also approved a training reimbursement agreement for Preston McFarland and several routine procurement and GovDeals disposals.
Personnel and staffing actions approved included: adding a fifth sergeant position in the jail; adjusting road-maintenance supervisory ranks (replacing a road superintendent with a road supervisor and adding a paving crew leader); promotions for Timothy Carter to paving road supervisor and Shane Black to road crew leader (effective April 6); and county-wide merit pay increases. Commissioners also approved two budget revisions and two bids listed on the agenda.
Land-use items cleared by the commission included preliminary approvals for three subdivisions: Ham Road (minor, two lots, District 3), Donnie Joe Pittman subdivision (minor, one lot, District 1), and Homestead (major preliminary approval for 160 lots). County Engineer Mr. Massey presented those items.
All votes on the recorded agenda items were voice votes recorded as ayes from the commissioners present. Recorded movers and seconders for headline items included Commissioner Ruth (minutes; several motions), Commissioner Gatlin, Commissioner Townsend, Commissioner Turner and Commissioner Roof/Rowe depending on the motion; all recorded votes on the docket items carried unanimously.
The commission set its next regular meeting for April 20 at 9:00 a.m.
