Hillsboro issues cultural proclamations, distributes more than $10,000 in community grants

At its Oct. 14 meeting the Hillsboro Township Committee recognized multiple cultural observances and awarded final Hillsboro Rewards grants totaling $10,117.83 to local nonprofit groups and community programs.
Cultural proclamations adopted included: Ayurveda Day (Sept. 23 recognition), National Diabetes Awareness Month (November), Do Not Disturb While Driving Day (Oct. 16), Hindu Heritage Month (October), and Italian‑American Heritage Month (October). Speakers representing the Hindu community, Michael’s Miracles (Type 1 diabetes support) and UNICO (Italian‑American service organization) accepted proclamations and described local activities and upcoming events.
The committee also accepted a $350 donation from Adams RCers and approved distribution of Hillsboro Rewards funds to multiple community groups. Grant recipients noted how funds will be used: Boy Scout Troop 7076 will purchase a generator for a storage barn; Dance for the Cure will buy materials for raffle baskets; Gigi’s Playhouse (Down syndrome support) received a $2,000 grant to support programs and equipment; Mary Mother of God Youth Group was awarded $2,000 for dehumidifiers and space upgrades; Project Graduation received $1,300 for signage; and The Rockets senior dance troupe received $2,000.
These presentations took place in the celebratory portion of the agenda and provided nonprofits an opportunity to summarize program needs and uses for the awards. Committee members applauded the groups and encouraged residents to volunteer and support the organizations.
What’s next: Recipients will use awarded funds for the stated purposes; the township said this was the final Hillsboro Rewards funding round as program reserves were exhausted.
