Sheriff recounts December vandalism; resident presses council on fire‑station staffing

Chief Deputy Mitch Brandingham of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office provided an update to the council and public on public‑safety activity and upcoming annual reporting materials.
Brandingham said deputies responded Dec. 28 to reports of a person throwing rocks at several downtown businesses and at a bank; deputies located and arrested a man identified on the record as Salvador Herrera Rosas on five counts of destruction of property, including one count exceeding $5,000. Brandingham said deputies were unable to establish a motive beyond the suspect's admission of the behavior. He added that New Year’s activity in the city was largely minor and that an annual report will be shared with council and the public soon.
Later in the meeting, during public comment, resident Patty Palmer urged council to act to prevent closure or understaffing of a Fernley fire station, saying the prospect had caused her sleeplessness and that firefighters working extended shifts could leave the city unable to staff two stations. The mayor offered a follow‑up conversation and invited the resident to come into his office to discuss concerns.
What’s next: The sheriff’s office will provide the annual report at a future meeting or through the county’s channels; council members and the resident agreed to follow up about fire department staffing and master‑plan proposals.
