Sheriff's office outlines de-escalation after man armed with rifle and knife

A sheriff's representative updated the Fernley City Council on recent activity and encouraged the public to use the department's resources and outreach events during the holidays.
The representative described a Nov. 25 critical incident: responding deputies located a subject who pointed a rifle at a deputy, dropped the rifle, then held a knife to a person's throat and fired at a patrol vehicle. "We're pretty fortunate that it didn't involve a shooting," the speaker said, adding deputies were able to subdue and de-escalate the subject and take him into custody.
The speaker said such critical incidents appear to be increasing and praised deputies for exercising restraint. The sheriff's office also announced participation in holiday events including the Chamber Christmas Parade, "Cocoa with a Cop," and a "Shop with a Sheriff" event and invited the public to reach out to Sergeants McDaniel or Holly and Chief Deputy Brandingham for clarification or concerns.
Council members thanked the deputies and exchanged holiday wishes; there were no follow-up questions from council on tactics or operational details at the meeting.
