Merced council accepts $77,000 state arts grant for General Vang Pow memorial

The Merced City Council unanimously accepted and appropriated a $77,000 California Arts in Parks implementation grant for the General Vang Pow memorial project.
Director Christopher Jensen told the council the grant application was prepared earlier in the year and the $77,000 will help finish features included in phase one of the park plan — monument panels overlooking the basin, an interactive art element and local internship support for youth work on the installation. “The $77,000 grant is a match… the funding is already allocated to the park, but the $77,000 will help us complete this project as part of phase one,” Jensen said.
Staff said late‑winter construction start with completion by late summer is the goal and that the project design incorporates input from Merced Lao community elders, who originally petitioned to name the park for General Vang Pow.
Council adopted Resolution 2025-66 to accept the grant and appropriate funds to the Parks and Community Services capital projects fund.
