Fernley senior committee reviews recent outreach: business expo, ice cream social and a fan-distribution with Rotary help

Committee members reported on recent outreach and planned near-term activities aimed at connecting seniors with services. Lisa Callahan summarized the committee's participation in the Fernley Business Expo on May 10, noting steady foot traffic and distribution of multiple giveaway fans that generated interest in senior services.

Members also reviewed an ice cream social held May 14 as part of the senior-center health and wellness fair, reporting strong attendance and noting plans to reduce quantities next year because of surplus. The group then confirmed details for a fan distribution scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. the following day at The Nest: Rotary Club volunteers will arrive with fans to assist, and City Hall staff said extra fans are stored in the municipal basement.

Casey Cast, representing the city manager's office, offered a banner and assistance with flyers and logistics; committee members agreed to bring chairs and coordinate setup with the store owner at The Nest. Albert Torres and others told the committee the VA and veteran associations could provide additional fans if needed and that local nonprofits (including NAMI) are potential partners for outreach and warmline referrals.

Why it matters: These efforts are the committee's primary channels to reach older residents with information about services, heat-relief resources and community programs. The committee arranged logistics and agreed who would staff the distribution and what materials (flyers, banners) to bring.
