Henry Koburn, a Greenville City staff member, said city and county fire agencies were still fighting a large blaze Tuesday morning at a recycling plant on White Horse Road.
Koburn said the Greenville City Fire Department sent "about 20 firefighters and five trucks" and that nearly 10 different departments from across Greenville County were on the scene under mutual-aid agreements. "We even have mutual aid agreements with the state," he said.
The plant contained many bales and tubes of cardboard packed inside the building, which Koburn described as creating a "large fire load" that has slowed suppression. He said crews were working to pull metal apart inside the building so they could remove bundled materials and extinguish remaining hotspots.
Koburn said the Gantt Fire District responded first and then called for backup from surrounding agencies, including Greenville City units. The city also deployed heavy machinery from public works, battalion trucks and an airport rescue and firefighting truck to support debris removal and access.
Fire officials told reporters that crews will continue working "until the fire is fully extinguished." They planned 12-hour shifts beginning 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. overnight and then 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. as needed to continue suppression and debris-removal operations.
For the city of Greenville, Koburn concluded the briefing by identifying himself: "For the city of Greenville, I'm Henry Koburn."
