St. Joseph recognizes first responders and citizens for June lifesaving

Deputy Chief Matt Johnson of the St. Joseph Police Department told the City Council on Aug. 18 that police, fire and ambulance personnel—along with several citizens—helped save a man who was found unresponsive outside a Quick Trip on June 26. He said officers arrived to find CPR in progress and that responders used an AED and mechanical compressions to restore a pulse before transport to St. Cloud Hospital.
“I'm so thankful that I'm here today and I am so thankful for all of you,” Brian Becker said after the council presentation, thanking the rescuers and saying he had since recovered and met a newborn grandchild he might have otherwise missed. Matt Johnson named the attending responders and citizens who received certificates, including Chief Dwight Funenstein, Officer Alex Lion, Officer Dan Funenstein (absent), Fire Captain Ken Jacobson and citizens Diane Hmering, Amber Wenty and Carla Marklowitz.
City leaders invited family members and responders forward to receive certificates and noted the event was intended to recognize both professional first responders and private citizens who rendered aid. The certificates conclude the city's presentation; family and responders then spoke privately with Becker following the ceremony.
