San Bernardino City Unified board adopts safety and recognition resolutions; public commenters praise after‑school programs

The San Bernardino City Unified School District board on Monday approved a set of routine proclamations and heard public comment from union, community and county representatives.
The board unanimously adopted a resolution directing district‑wide participation in the Great California Shakeout earthquake drill on Oct. 16, 2025 at 10:16 a.m. (moved by Miss Medina; second by Dr. Wyatt), a resolution recognizing Oct. 12–18, 2025 as California Week of the School Administrator (moved by Mrs. Alexander; second by Miss Medina), and a proclamation of Oct. 23–31, 2025 as Red Ribbon Week encouraging drug‑prevention activities in schools (moved by Mrs. Alexander; second by Dr. Wyatt).
During public comment, Barbara Paschek Cox, president of the San Bernardino Teachers Association, urged action on fair wages and safer working conditions: “When educators thrive, students soar,” she told trustees. Terry Boykins, executive director of Project Fighting Chance, described after‑school programming that organizers say has produced local champions and serves hundreds of youth; he invited trustees to view a video and promoted a non‑district event, a Nov. 22 ‘Jabathon’ fitness day at the Ruben Compost Community Center.
A county representative, Edwin Delgado, spoke on behalf of Supervisor Joe Baca Jr. and thanked the board and district staff for a $1.3 million playground improvement at Arrowhead Elementary School. The board also heard a college and career‑readiness update from district and community partners and several student reports about upcoming school events.
In a report from closed session the board accepted hearing‑panel recommendations ordering expulsions and suspensions (in compliance with Education Code section 48900), authorized readmission of at least one previously expelled student and approved petitions to expunge or rescind records where appropriate; motions were moved and seconded by trustees and recorded as carried.
What’s next: The board requested follow‑up where public commenters asked for district responses; staff indicated they will reach out to speakers if follow‑up is required.
