Georgia House Rules Committee advances slate of bills, sends package to calendar

The Georgia House Rules Committee met and advanced a broad package of bills to the rules calendar, hearing presentations from multiple sponsors on measures that span education, property disclosures, veterans' issues and procedural updates.

Representative Airheart presented House Bill 181 to eliminate a duplicative readoption step for families who adopted internationally and already have U.S. citizenship documentation, saying the change would remove a costly barrier for those families. Representative Rice told the committee HB 1107, the "excellent teacher preparation act," would ensure education preparation programs graduate teachers "classroom ready day one," and said the bill has backing from the chancellor and the Professional Standards Commission.

Other sponsors introduced bills on flood-disclosure requirements for homebuyers (HB 618, Representative Campbell), expanded career-academy access for home- and private-school students (HB 971, Representative Townsend), a maternal birth-leave benefit for state employees and teachers (HB 1118), and procedural modernizations such as electronic probate filing (HB 530, Representative Leverett). Several veterans' measures were presented, as was HB 413 to clarify transfer-on-death deed recording and HB 1434 to help local governments protect airport approach airspace.

Committee members reviewed a long list of chairman and member picks for the floor calendar and approved the package for placement on the rules calendar. The committee also handled a handful of procedural motions: members unanimously voted to recommit House Bill 1077 to the Rules Standing Committee for a scrivener correction and to refer House Bill 1129 back to Rules at the request from above.

The meeting closed after the committee formalized its picks and completed the procedural votes; the chair adjourned the session.
