The board approved item 20.4 to award the base paving bid for the High School East administrative parking lot to the lowest responsive bidder. Mr. Schimp explained that the solicitation included a base bid and an alternate for major drainage pipe replacement; the district accepted the base bid only after determining the alternate’s price was substantially higher.
"The bid that went out had an alternate listed for the replacement of the main drainage pipe. We didn't like the price that we received on that, so we are only awarding the base bid amount," Mr. Schimp said, adding that the district will rebid the pipe project separately as a standalone procurement to save several hundred thousand dollars.
Board members noted how costly paving and site work can be and thanked staff for fiscal scrutiny in declining the alternate that carried higher unit pricing. The motion to approve the contracts for the base bid carried during the BNF consent vote.
Why this matters: the board’s approach preserves immediate parking‑lot improvements while reducing near‑term capital outlay; rebidding the drainage alternate aims to reduce overall project cost and preserve contingency funds for other bond work.
