The County Police Review Commission on May 9 discussed public outreach planning for the city’s military equipment use (MEU) review and urged its ad hoc committee to set objectives, materials and dates for community forums.
“This is really, again, an opportunity for us to discuss as well as providing direction regarding our public outreach, objectives, materials, scheduling related to the MEU community engagement forms,” Chair Sample said as the commission opened the item.
Commissioners discussed a timeline that runs through the last week in July and debated venue options. Commissioner Korbes suggested the Oak Park Community Center as a historically used site; Commissioner Rostro proposed La Familia Counseling Center at the Maple Neighborhood Center and offered to share a contact; Commissioner Salazar recommended Swanston Community Center in Arden for north–south accessibility. Commissioners also discussed conducting more than one forum and noted Brown Act constraints that limit attendance to fewer than a quorum at preparatory meetings.
Captain Buchanan said the Police Department could support materials and logistics for one forum and offered to coordinate with city staff on locations. The commission agreed to ask the ad hoc committee to reach out to city staff for availability and to report back.
No formal vote was taken; commissioners instructed the ad hoc committee to confirm locations, respect quorum rules and coordinate with city staff and SPD on outreach materials and logistics.
