Council accepts Hormel Foundation grant awards; some council members abstain

City staff told the Austin City Council that the Hormel Foundation awarded grants to support city and community projects.
Craig Clark announced the awards and said, "This year, I'm pleased to announce uh $961,000 [clears throat] uh 500 uh for city projects," and told the council that most requests were funded and that specific awards are listed in the meeting packet. Council members thanked the Hormel Foundation for ongoing generosity.
When the council voted to accept the grant awards, Council member Laura Hely and Council member Obala recorded abstentions; the motion passed with five votes in favor. Staff and council members said the grants support projects that the city could not otherwise fund without foundation support.
Council members also made light remarks about a funded pickleball item that drew laughter during the meeting. Staff advised that the packet contains the detailed award list for organizations and city projects.
