City engineering staff told the Austin City Council that the city received a proposal from the Institute for Environmental Assessment (IEA) to inspect a flood-affected property proposed for acquisition for asbestos and other hazardous materials.
Stephen Lang said the IEA base proposal is $8,950 and that the city would pay an additional $21 for every sample sent to the lab; he also warned that the project could require a couple hundred samples depending on conditions at the site. He told council that staff recommends awarding the work to IEA and that the project would be funded 50% with a DNR grant and 50% with local option sales tax.
Council approved the staff recommendation to award IEA the inspection work and directed staff to proceed. The inspection will inform whether additional remediation or abatement is required before acquisition and may influence next steps on the property purchase and any assessment or cleanup costs.
