Austin council approves feasibility reports for 2026 street reconstruction program

The Austin City Council unanimously approved feasibility reports that will begin planning for the city's 2026 street reconstruction program.
City engineering staff told the council the list proposed for feasibility work includes 8th Street Southeast, 7th Avenue Southwest, 8th Avenue and 26th Street Southwest (mill and overlay), 9th Avenue Northwest, Fifth Street and Seventh Street Northwest, and 14th Street Northwest. Staff said 11th Street Northwest was cut from the 2026 Capital Improvement Program during budget changes and will not be included in the 2026 list.
The staff presentation also noted the Oakland Avenue reconstruction previously advanced under a multi-year schedule; property assessments for that three-year project were locked at 2025 rates so homeowners would not be penalized if their project occurs in 2026 or 2027.
Council approved moving forward with the feasibility reports so engineering can develop scope, cost estimates and assessment approaches. Next steps are preliminary engineering, public outreach and bringing project-specific assessments and construction recommendations back to the council for approval.
"This is the first step in preparing for our 2026 reconstruction program," said Stephen Lang, who presented the item and answered council questions.
