The Elk Grove Unified School District board voted unanimously to adopt two resolutions: Resolution 95 declaring June 19, 2025 as a local Juneteenth holiday and Resolution 96 promoting secure firearm storage to increase student and school safety.
Dr. Collier introduced Resolution 95 and outlined its purpose to recognize Juneteenth's historical significance and to ask district departments to provide curricular resources. Trustee Ballerini moved to approve the resolution and Trustee Bowwin seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
Trustee Levasser presented Resolution 96, citing research linking secure firearm storage to reduced risk of unintentional and self-inflicted injuries among children and teens, and referencing state resources from the California Department of Education for violence-prevention materials. During public comment a community member said they support the resolution but encouraged the district to pair storage advocacy with firearm-safety education for families: "A hammer in the right hands can build you a house... a healthy respect for firearms would be a better approach," the commenter said.
Trustee Alviani moved to approve Resolution 96 and Mr. Yang seconded; the board again voted unanimously to adopt the resolution.
Both resolutions were adopted on the consent of the board, with no recorded opposing votes. The district will make associated curricular and community resources available through district departments and the professional learning office, as noted during the presentations.
