Montgomery County Council honors advocate Megan Jones and proclaims Middle Eastern American Heritage Month

Council President Kate Stewart read a proclamation recognizing Megan Jones for her lifetime of advocacy and service to people with developmental disabilities, noting her election as vice chair of the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council in 2022 and her testimony in Annapolis to update state law. Council Member Lukey presented the proclamation; family members Sylvia and Bob Jones were acknowledged in the chamber.
"Megan was an extraordinary person who lived a life of service," Lukey said during the reading of the proclamation. Sylvia Jones addressed the council, thanking attendees and noting the importance of continued advocacy on her daughter’s behalf.
The council also proclaimed March 2025 as Middle Eastern American Heritage Month. Kate Stewart said the observance recognizes residents with roots in countries across the Middle East and North Africa and encourages participation in community events. Dr. Debbie Trent and members of the Middle Eastern American Advisory Group described cultural contributions and announced a community resource fair on April 5 at the Executive Office Building cafeteria.
Stewart said the proclamations are meant to recognize local leadership and encourage ongoing work to broaden inclusion and cultural understanding in Montgomery County.
The proclamations included logistical notes: county staff announced a memorial service for Megan Jones on July 12 at St. Francis of Assisi in Derwood and directed residents to Upcounty Community Resources' website for details.
