Parker accepts donated low-water turf for Salsbury Park trial to test water savings

Parker’s Town Council approved Resolution 26-016 on Feb. 2 to accept a donation of low-water turf and installation services for a trial at Salsbury Regional Park’s Field 4.
Bruce Lee presented the item, saying the town expects to receive approximately 25,000 square feet of 'Tokama/Tacoma 31' turf and installation services, a donation the presenter estimated at about $54,000 in value. Staff described the turf as a warm-season, cold-tolerant hybrid developed from research (noted as originating at Oklahoma State University) and characterized it as a drought-resistant option that could reduce water use on sports fields by roughly half under optimal conditions.
Lee told council the donor (Green Valley Turf) plans to cover labor and installation; the town’s remaining costs would be limited to site repurposing, recycling or composting removed turf and any short-term maintenance during the trial. Council members asked about the financial impact and whether the donor could gain marketing benefit; staff said installation and labor are donated and any site visits by interested parties would require prior notice.
Council members expressed support for piloting water-wise turf in a high-use athletic field and for studying whether the product performs in Colorado’s climate. A motion to approve Resolution 26-016 accepting the donation passed unanimously.
Resolution 26-016: adopted unanimously. Staff will monitor performance, water savings and maintenance requirements and report back to council as the trial proceeds.
