The Garden Grove City Council voted to name the community room in the new Police Department building in honor of William J. Dalton, who served as a police lieutenant, councilmember and mayor, councilmembers said April 14.
City Manager Lisa Kim presented staff's recommendation, noting that Dalton had been an early advocate for a new police facility. Mayor Pro Tem George Breitenham, who brought the idea forward, described Dalton as "one of the most popular mayors our city's ever had" and said Dalton "started the entire project for this new police station."
Council members spoke in favor, and family members accepted the recognition at the meeting. "It's a tremendous honor that his name is going to be sitting on top of the community room as the William J. Dalton Community Room," a Dalton family member said.
The council approved the naming by roll call; the motion carried with seven yes votes. Staff and council discussed plans to include additional naming recognitions in the building going forward.
What happens next: staff will include the Dalton name in project signage and celebrate with a family and community recognition event when the building opens.
