Elk Grove Unified board adopts student bill of rights resolution

Assistant Superintendent Mr. Schwitzer told the board that members of the district's student equity councils and student board member Selene Chen researched student bill of rights models from other districts, drafted an EGUSD version and proposed revisions during the 2024-25 school year. "We are requesting the board adopt student bill of rights resolution number two for the 2025-26 school year," Schwitzer said.
Board President Vargas asked for any blue cards and, after no public comment, the board moved to adopt the resolution. The motion was moved by Mr. Yang, seconded by Miss Ballerini, and carried unanimously.
The board did not record additional changes to the resolution during the meeting; Dr. Coats and district staff indicated the board would revisit administrative details as needed at the board's next regular meeting.
The action completes a student-led drafting process the district said began in 2020 when student equity groups organized around representation and rights. The board scheduled no further procedural steps for this item beyond the approval vote reported at the meeting.
