Springfield Township Committee adopts 2025 budget, cites $146 average household increase

The Springfield Township Committee voted unanimously to adopt its 2025 municipal budget, after a public hearing and committee remarks emphasizing service preservation and infrastructure investment.

Alex, chair of the township budget subcommittee, presented the plan as the product of months of review with the township administrator, CFO, department heads and citizen budget‑review volunteers. "This is our favorite time of the year. It's time to adopt our municipal budget for the year of 2025," Alex said, outlining priorities that include maintaining police and fire staffing, road resurfacing and a new pocket park at Oakland and Mountain Avenue. He described investments in digital crosswalks, police body cameras, IT upgrades and DPW equipment.

Committee members framed the budget’s local impact in household terms. Alex and others said the budget represents an estimated $146 increase per average assessed household; committee members also discussed an average tax‑bill context figure mentioned in the presentation. Several members stressed that the majority of residents’ tax bills are driven by school and county levies, which the township cannot control.

Deputy Mayor Lauer and Committeeman Weber praised the budget’s transparency and the work of citizen volunteers who reviewed the plan. Lauer said the committee sought to avoid cutting services while managing inflationary pressures on salaries and health insurance. "We don't want to cut the levels of service that our residents expect," Lauer said.

The committee then opened public comment on the budget; no members of the public spoke. Alex moved to adopt Resolution 2025‑158, the clerk read the resolution, and the committee carried the motion on a roll‑call vote with all listed members voting yes.

The budget package includes project-level investments the committee highlighted during discussion and administration reports, including a planned pocket park, continued roadwork and upgrades to public‑safety equipment. The administration also reported that the township secured a $416,000 county grant for improvements at Oakland Park, which officials said should reduce the burden on residents for that project.
