Neighbors told the council that pickleball activity at Rainier Trails Park has produced daily noise since lines were added in May 2025 and asked the city to remove the lines and restore the court to tennis-only use.
"A pickleball group plays daily beginning in May and continuing through the summer months, creating a level of noise that directly affects those of us living in close proximity," said Richard Gardine, reading a written statement on behalf of Stonebrook neighbors. He said some homes are as close as about 30 feet from the court, that residents pursued remedies without success, and that the parks board voted two weeks earlier to remove the lines and restore the court to tennis only.
Council members discussed options and timing. Several members said they favored waiting to remove the Rainier Trails lines until Garrett Park’s seven‑court facility is resurfaced and available; council members noted that resurfacing is planned to start May 18 and that the new facility should provide a nearby alternative.
"We're gonna have seven courts at Garrett. It's going to allow the group actually all to play all at once, but it's going to be a proper facility," said Councilmember Storton, who said he plays pickleball and lives in the neighborhood. Several other council members emphasized fiscal prudence — objecting to paying to remove lines now — and recommended reassessing usage once Garrett Park is ready.
Council directed staff to include the item on the council agenda for May 18 for further discussion after the Garrett Park work begins. No formal policy change or ordinance was adopted tonight.
