Committee approves Ready Transports contract for emergency detention transports

The Madison Finance Committee on April 13 authorized the mayor and clerk to enter a competitively selected service contract with Ready Transports LLC for the balance of 2026, with up to four optional one‑year renewals for emergency detention transport services.
President Bidar called for the motion and the committee approved the contract unanimously. Captain Matt Nordquist, answering questions from Alderman Verveer, said "the last two years we've averaged right in the neighborhood of 140" transports a year to Winnebago, with some months higher and some lower. Nordquist said patrol still handles some transports when Ready cannot, and he described the number as generally steady in recent years.
Alderman Verveer asked that staff track transport data going forward to better understand how collaborations with CARES and Ready Transports affect police workload; she said CARES reports often avoid sending people to detention facilities and recommended better data to show systemwide effects. The committee recorded a unanimous vote in favor of the authorization.
