The Dawes County Board of Commissioners conducted a series of routine business items at its July 8 meeting, approving a personnel policy manual, confirming an appointment to the safety committee, awarding a tourism grant, authorizing surplus property bidding, approving a utility road-crossing petition and auditing claims.
In formal votes, Commissioner Jake Stewart moved—and Commissioner Walter Juhlin seconded—motions that passed by unanimous roll call for the appointment of Deb Lesmeister as Safety Committee Secretary and the adoption of the county’s final personnel policy manual. The board also approved an application from Fur Trade Days, Inc. for use of the courthouse grounds and awarded a $900 grant to The Slim Days Foundation after the Tourism Board recommended that amount from a $2,125 request.
Treasurer Sam Wellnitz requested that surplus items (one Steelcase six-drawer cabinet and three Anderson-Hockey six-drawer file cabinets) be declared surplus; the board approved opening a two-week public bidding period with bids to be opened at the July 22, 2025 meeting. Assessor Lindy Coleman recommended MIPS be designated to print LB 644 postcards because MIPS can pull data directly from the county system; the board agreed with the recommendation. Planning engineer Brad Johnson presented a petition for Northwest Rural Public Power District to trench across Table Road to replace underground cable installed in 1978; the board approved the road-crossing petition and specified trenching depth and a closure of approximately one hour, with trench depth to be determined by Highway Superintendent Wade Yada.
Financial actions: the board approved monthly fee and mileage reports by general consent and approved all submitted claims by roll call. The audited claims list included vendor payments recorded in the meeting file, with specific line items in the record such as Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Nebraska ($40,265.29), First National Bank, North Platte ($20,670.44), and Chadron Public Schools ($5,518.40). The county also discussed a lodging tax letter issued July 7, 2025, with Deputy County Attorney Adam Edmund advising that businesses must report quarterly based on a list provided by the tourism director.
The meeting adjourned at 10:02 a.m.; the board scheduled its next regular meeting for July 22, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. in the Dawes County Commissioner Room.
