Board recognizes students, approves personnel moves and multiple service contracts

At the March 11 meeting the Canfield Local Schools Board honored Rotary Students of the Month across grade levels and approved a slate of personnel and contractual items.
Principals and staff presented students recognized by the Rotary Club, with Claire Hrina named the high-school Rotary Student of the Month. Principals Judd Rubin, Michael Flood and Travis Laffer introduced other honorees and described their achievements.
On personnel, the board approved resignations and retirements (including retiring special-needs aides and teachers effective June 1, 2026), several classified hires and transfers (custodians, cooks and summer secretaries), and involuntary reassignments for next school year intended to sustain curriculum coverage amid attrition.
Doctor Alquist read a list of donations and sponsorships totaling $25,913.42 to benefit programs such as the Canfield Players and the high-school speech-and-debate team; the board approved acceptance of those gifts.
The board also approved several contracts and service agreements: a previously presented agreement signed March 5; a service and additional service agreement with the ESC of Eastern Ohio to provide special-education supports (OT, speech, visually impaired services and related staff training); an application-services contract with Access for accounting and student information system software; and a three-year agreement with HPC for Medicaid billing services. Treasurer Marco described HPC’s pricing model as a fixed annual fee he cited in discussion as $9,000 per year, which he said compares favorably with percentage-based models.
Finally, the board approved a contract with the Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities for the 2025–26 school year.
Next steps: Human-resources and the superintendent’s office will proceed with hires and placements as approved; contract documents will be filed in the treasurer’s office.
