Canfield board approves athletics transfer, bus-replenishment plan and revised appropriations

The Canfield Local Schools Board of Education on March 11 approved several financial moves aimed at stabilizing extracurricular and capital spending, including a $100,000 transfer to the athletics fund and a plan to phase in bus replacements.
Treasurer Marco told the board the district’s bank balance is about $750,000 lower than a year earlier and that the forecast projects the district ending the fiscal year about $1.4–$1.5 million in the red. He said athletics-related accounts (fund 309-900a) have run negative because season revenues lag costs for uniforms, officiating and supplies. The board approved a motion to transfer $100,000 from the general fund to the athletics fund to cover those shortfalls.
On transportation, the board approved a phased bus fleet replenishment plan for the O70 capital projects fund and passed a separate resolution authorizing the Ohio Schools Council to advertise and receive bus bids on the district’s behalf. Superintendent Noel described replacement cycles (longer if fewer buses are bought yearly, shorter if more are purchased) and emphasized that authorizing the Ohio Schools Council to solicit bids does not obligate the district to buy buses.
The board also adopted revised appropriations that include appropriating $500,000 to the O70 fund to provide funding availability should the district pursue a bus purchase through the cooperative. Treasurer Marco said the change is largely “cleanup” related to federal grants and capital planning.
All motions were moved, seconded and approved by roll call.
Next steps: the district will post the bus-plan details and any bid timeline if the board later elects to pursue purchases through the Ohio Schools Council.
