UCPS honors senior Lim Simmons and recognizes two staff as 'UCPS influencers'

The Union County Board of Education honored student and staff accomplishments during its April meeting.
The board presented the John H. Crowder Service Award to senior Lim Simmons, who the district described as holding a 4.69 weighted GPA, completing seven Advanced Placement courses and serving in leadership roles including National Honor Society and the Superintendent Advisory Council. Presenters said Simmons has been accepted to Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and plans to study political science or public policy.
The board also recognized two staff members as UCPS influencers. Stephanie Burrus, principal at Fairview Elementary School, read the nomination for Joseph Mayoni, an agriculture teacher who transitioned to teach ACT coursework and who the nomination credited with engaging students in applied learning. Brian Joiner, director of transportation, presented a nomination for Pam Shepard, a transportation routing technician with more than 20 years at UCPS who was praised for timely responses to parent and staff inquiries.
The board read a proclamation recognizing Joseph Mayoni and Pam Shepard as the UCPS influencers for April 2026 and congratulated both honorees.
No formal actions were taken on these items; they were recognition items on the agenda.
