District outlines LCAP progress: structured literacy PD, math coaching and expanded SEL supports

Math teachers in identified sites received UCI Math 'math talks' training along with site visits for coaching and co‑teaching. The district also described expanded designated ELD, a review of EL intervention materials, and restorative practice and Capturing Kids’ Hearts work to strengthen Tier‑1 social‑emotional supports.
Board members asked detailed technical questions. Trustee Conté asked how structured literacy and the LCR SET grant intersect with dual‑immersion (90/10) schedules; district staff said the grant expanded dual‑language content and that schedules are being reviewed to ensure adequate minutes in both languages and that ELD minutes were not double‑counted. Trustees also asked about the purpose of administrator walkthroughs (described as coaching and feedback distinct from contractual formal observations), how BPST and the state reading‑difficulty screener are being collected and whether REWARDS training for upper grades is being implemented and monitored — district leaders described plans to centralize BPST results and noted REWARDS PD for 5th grade is complete and 4th grade training is underway.
The presentation emphasized family‑focused activities (Parent Involvement Academy, ESL classes in partnership with Rio Hondo Community College) and a Parent Volunteer Academy that on‑boarded 62 new volunteers this year for a total of 260 volunteers district‑wide.
The board will continue oversight through targeted follow‑up questions and by monitoring data collection and the planned next phase of PD and coaching.
