The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors on April 13 reviewed a package of proposed changes to election precincts and polling locations intended to improve ADA accessibility and reduce election costs, and directed staff to advertise most of the changes for an additional 15‑day public comment period while excluding the contested Walkers Creek consolidation.
Staff described consolidations and polling‑place moves across multiple districts — including proposals affecting Buffalo, Cars Creek, Natural Bridge, South River and Walkers Creek districts — and said the changes were advertised after the electoral board’s request and a public hearing was held on March 23. The public comment period later closed on March 25 and staff had received five speakers and several written comments on the proposal.
During board discussion members expressed particular concern about the Walkers Creek proposals. The board indicated consensus to leave the Walkers Creek district’s changes out of the advertised ordinance and to proceed with advertising the remainder for a 15‑day period; staff said no additional public hearing would be required for that 15‑day advertisement but the public could submit written comments or speak at a future meeting. Staff also noted that any adopted ordinance would not take effect until 30 days after adoption, as required by law.
The board directed staff to advertise the modified ordinance and bring the item back for the board’s consideration at the May 11 meeting, giving residents one more focused comment window on the remaining proposed consolidations.
