Puyallup proclaims Pierce College appreciation week and Earth Day; conservation partners outline volunteer plans

At the start of the April 14 meeting Mayor Ned Whitting read three proclamations recognizing Pierce College Puallup, Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor/Tree City Day. The proclamations highlighted Pierce College Puallup’s history and local workforce role, the city’s land‑acknowledgement of ancestral Puyallup tribal lands, and the city’s 2026 Tree City USA re‑certification.
Udit Losano, vice president for learning and student success at Pierce College Puallup, thanked the city for the proclamation and invited residents to college events including a spring fair and an Earth Day open house. “We are so grateful for our continued work together and for continuing to promote higher education within our communities,” Losano said.
Dana Kagan, executive director of the Pierce Conservation District, accepted the Earth Day proclamation and emphasized ongoing stewardship programs across the city. “Earth Day isn’t just one day, but it’s literally all year long,” Kagan said, and she highlighted volunteer opportunities and event series that run throughout Earth Month.
Brian Mullman, habitat stewardship program manager with the conservation district, described the partnership with the city (the Green Puyallup partnership), tree‑planting work and stewardship sites across Puyallup. He said the partnership oversaw planting hundreds of trees and more than a dozen volunteer plantings in 2025; he asked volunteers and community leaders to sign up for a May stewardship training series.
What the council did: The proclamations were read and accepted; the council used the presentations to highlight volunteer recruitment and community events during Earth Month.
