The Lakewood City School District Board of Education on April 13 recognized two students from Franklin School of Opportunity as Resilient Rangers and highlighted educators and programs that district leaders said support student success.
Superintendent Nidwis invited FSO coordinator Terry Borino Lwell and staff to present. The board and staff introduced Sylvie Smith, a senior on track to graduate with the class of 2026, and Keiante Swain, a junior expected to graduate with the class of 2027. School staff credited both students with strong attendance, leadership and classroom engagement; school materials say Sylvie plans to attend Kent State University.
FSO students and staff described a curriculum that emphasizes the district's six vision competencies, including resilience and growth mindset, and noted smaller class sizes and a student-centered environment that allows extra time for skill mastery, retakes and individualized feedback. Presenters also cited partnerships and supports, including the Elks Club Beacon Grant that supplies student essentials and bus passes to reduce attendance barriers, and a career-day partnership with Junior Achievement.
Board members praised the student presenters and asked whether the FSO location made it easier for students to participate in nearby Westshore programs; staff said proximity did help. Several trustees suggested using the student video shown at the meeting as an outreach or marketing piece.
The board did not take formal action on the presentation; it was presented as part of the superintendent's report.
