Vanden High named a 2026 California Distinguished School; board honors students and staff

Vanden High School was recognized by the Travis Unified School District governing board on April 14 after being named a 2026 California Distinguished School, an award the district said fewer than 10% of California schools receive.
District and school leaders said the honor recognizes both strong overall academic performance and improvements among historically underserved student groups. Principal remarks emphasized the district’s emphasis on academic, social and emotional supports that contributed to gains. Trustees thanked teachers, administrators and support staff and invited the Vanden student leadership and program representatives to the dais for a community photo.
The board used the occasion to recognize several student- and staff-led achievements: Vanden’s first collegiate flag-football scholarship recipients, multiple athletic milestones (girls basketball playoff performance and a 27-year streak of league championships), cheer and color-guard regional and national titles, and theater program awards and festival participation. Officials said the school will be honored at a state ceremony later in April.
Board members said the recognitions and awards reflect teamwork across administrators, teachers, students and families. The board’s formal recognition will be forwarded to the California Department of Education and to the school for its records.
