Kasson veterans memorial committee reports city funding commitment, aims to begin construction this summer

The committee reported $45,000 raised so far—largely through the American Legion—and indicated local groups (including the Lions Club) have pledged in‑kind support such as benches. The committee and city plan to remove the sand volleyball court and an existing memorial at the site to demonstrate progress and make room for the new monument and recognition walls.
Project cost estimates discussed in the meeting put the overall goal near $200,000; committee figures cited roughly $109,000 just for the granite elements in the packet, while other line items (concrete work, benches, site prep) add to the total. Committee members said they will continue fundraising, pursue grants and solicit local contractor support; one donor (SL/representative Trevor) offered to donate substantial preparation work.
Committee members said they would provide mockups and have a fundraising presence (a web/GoFundMe entry was referenced) so that local businesses and donors could see design proposals. The board did not take a formal vote on the memorial at this meeting; staff said early site work is planned for summer to signal progress to potential donors.
