District human-resources staff told the Barstow Unified board the school year started strongly and the department is actively working through recruitments and onboarding.
The staff report listed current classified staffing: 380 classified employees in total, including 178 full-time classified positions, 122 part-time positions with benefits, 80 part-time non-benefit positions and 15 classified management employees. The HR speaker said several recruitments are in testing and that digital testing produces rank lists immediately, which should shorten the time from application to interview. The district aims to start interviews the first week of September for several classifications, including paraprofessional positions.
District HR acknowledged persistent difficulty filling short, 3.5-hour paraprofessional roles because applicants frequently withdraw before interviews. The department said it is using college recruiting and expedited testing to improve conversion from applicants to hires.
On safety and training, the district reported conducting ALICE active-shooter team-building training and CPI crisis-intervention training July 28–30 and said campus-safety testing is scheduled to generate new candidate lists. Staff also reported digitizing personnel records and moving pallets of files out of storage for scanning.
The board received the report and then proceeded to routine agenda items.
