The motion, introduced by Magistrate Lear and seconded by Magistrate Adam Wheatley, directs the court to ask state senator Jimmy Hickden and state representative Candy Maseroni to prefile a joint resolution to formalize the naming. The court approved the request by voice vote.
Court members described Puit as a Nelson County native who was deployed with the 6th Air Refueling Wing and was reported killed while serving overseas. "We extend condolences to her family in this time of loss," the court said in a prepared resolution summary presented on the record.
The court also said it chose the requested segment because Puit’s parents attend New Saving Baptist Church near the selected stretch and noted the timing is driven by the legislative session calendar; staff said waiting until the next meeting could delay the request by a year.
The court did not adopt the highway designation itself; the action was limited to a formal request for county support and to ask local state legislators to file the necessary resolution in their chambers.
Next steps: the county will forward the request to the named state legislators for prefiling and will inform the family and community when lawmakers take action.
