Kern County Board approves resolutions honoring teachers and staff, and authorizes two surplus-property sales

At its April 14, 2026 meeting, the Kern County Board of Education approved a series of routine actions including ceremonial resolutions and two surplus-property declarations that the board authorized for sale.

The board unanimously adopted a resolution designating May 13, 2026, as Day of the Teacher in Kern County, citing Education Code Section 37222.10. Trustees then approved a resolution recognizing Classified School Employee Week for May 18–22, 2026, honoring classified employees’ contributions to school operations.

On property matters, staff presented a resolution declaring 10.34 acres near the intersection of Cottonwood Road and Bond’s Drive in Bakersfield as exempt surplus property and indicated the board would pursue sale; trustees voted to approve moving forward. Staff said proceeds from the sale will return to the district’s building fund to be used for future construction or purchases. The board also approved declaring 901 Tower Way as exempt surplus property and authorized sale, noting one of the previously purchased Tower Way properties will instead be used for a state-operated 4C's child-care program and that sale proceeds will also be returned to the building fund.

The Williams Act uniform quarterly reports were presented and approved; staff reported no complaints in the packet. Several trustees offered community updates, praised the recently reopened Bell Tower Plaza ribbon-cutting and congratulated eight California Distinguished Schools for 2026. The board adjourned at 8:11 p.m. with a next regular meeting scheduled for May 12 at 6:30 p.m.
