The committee reviewed a multiagency briefing on preparations for major sports and cultural events this spring and summer, including FIFA World Cup matches hosted regionally and the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Marketing and communications plans include a World Cup microsite and citywide activations such as 48 inflatable 15‑foot soccer balls sited across Miami Beach; director Melissa Bertier said the balls will be “15 feet” and will carry a QR code and link to event information. Economic development staff described expanded business outreach and a business‑concierge effort to help restaurants and retailers plan staffing, permits and promotions.
Transportation and parking staff said regional partners (Miami‑Dade County) will lead stadium‑bound shuttle services and that the city will implement active traffic management, special signal timing and a construction moratorium in entertainment corridors to reduce lane closures. The police department outlined unified operational planning and said it is coordinating with county and municipal partners to manage public‑safety needs over the extended event period.
A recurring issue was how restaurants and sidewalk concessionaires may legally show outdoor FIFA broadcasts. Staff reported the city manager will work with legal and administration to permit outdoor broadcast viewing for concession areas during the FIFA period and the committee asked administration to prepare a May resolution to formalize the temporary allowance; commissioners also asked for a full briefing to all commissioners on operational plans and contingency measures for the event window.
The committee urged aggressive outreach so small businesses that are not in business improvement districts receive notice and assistance to take advantage of the events.
