Manassas board adopts Savvas Envision Math after update on grant-funded math relaunch

The Manassas City School Board on Thursday heard a detailed update on K–12 mathematics instruction and unanimously adopted Savvas Envision Math for kindergarten through 12th grade.
Dr. Sarah Burkehead, PreK–6 mathematics coordinator, and Elizabeth Susco, 7–12 mathematics coordinator, briefed the board on a multi-year effort to move the district toward student-centered math instruction grounded in math workshop structures. The pair said the division received nearly $87,000 from the Virginia Department of Education’s Mathematics Innovation Grant to fund job-embedded professional learning, school-based coaching and implementation supports with national partners Jennifer Lamp and Skip Tyler.
The presenters described a suite of supports: school-based professional learning days, collaborative secondary sessions, an exit survey to measure teacher practice changes and use of assessment tools including the Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) and supplemental STMath. They reported measurable STMath gains—on average an 8% pre- to post-quiz increase on objectives—and said enrollment in advanced courses and AP offerings has risen substantially in recent years.
After the presentation, Miss Stevens moved to adopt Savvas Envision Math K–12 as the division’s primary math instructional resource; Miss Brussia seconded the motion. The board approved the adoption by voice vote; the chair announced the motion carried 7–0.
The coordinators said next steps include continued professional learning funded by the innovation grant, monitoring VGA and STMath results and supporting principals and teachers during the 2026–27 textbook implementation and associated coaching cycles.
