The mayor told the council that residents had proposed a community garden at FAL Park and asked permission to explore startup details, including irrigation and volunteer organization. The city owns the property, and the mayor said there is a well on site that could provide irrigation. Council members and residents supported further study, suggested outreach to the school and Scouts, and asked Parks and Recreation staff to work with volunteers on design and startup costs.
The mayor also floated a seasonal Sunday farmers market in the library parking lot from about 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., suggesting preference for New Jersey producers ("Jersey Fresh") if possible. Council members cautioned about tight parking in the library lot and said the city would consider alternate sites (including a field or park) if needed and coordinate with the H County Chamber of Commerce and county tourism programs.
Earlier in public comment, business owner Jesse Billers asked the council to reopen discussion about allowing cannabis retailers and other downtown businesses to extend operating hours to help local merchants during winter months and while the nearby bridge is closed in January. The mayor said the city and chamber had hand-delivered letters to businesses encouraging late-night Friday hours and planned additional promotion via the county tourism program.
No formal decisions were made; the council directed staff to follow up with interested parties, to notice any required permits or reviews, and to coordinate with the Chamber of Commerce.
