Mount Vernon staff presented plans to relocate the Veterans Walk of Honor from the square to American Heritage Park, which staff said would provide a wider, elevated pathway, better sight lines for memorial bricks and room for future expansion.
The design would raise brick memorials on an angled retainer with a six-foot-wide path to reduce bending and foot traffic over memorials. The plan also includes benches made from reclaimed larchwood and pavers representing military branches (committee materials noted inclusion of Space Force among the service stones).
Staff said an unnamed donor has offered a touring statue (described as a "silent battle" statue) and the donor would provide the statue and base; staff said they will prepare legislation to accept the donation at a future meeting. Committee members asked about the adjacent model house and options for making it a railroad museum as part of a broader heritage park concept.
What’s next: The resolution to relocate the Walk of Honor was scheduled for a second reading; staff will draft legislation to accept the offered donation if the council wishes to pursue it.
