Provo City Council approves $96,547 to hire three temporary firefighters

Fire Chief Jeremy Hedman presented the request, saying the funding would allow the department to put one additional firefighter on each shift and to conduct training in a single eight-week camp rather than repeating training cycles. Hedman said the total request is $96,547 and that roughly $60,000 would cover the three firefighters while about $36,000 would purchase the equipment needed to get them started. He said the timing was important because several qualified candidates remained available now but some had already been hired by other departments.
Councilor Whitlock said he supported the request and noted the hires would be funded by reductions to the department's overtime budget, making the change budget-neutral on an ongoing basis. There was no public comment on the item.
The council called and recorded a voice vote. Councilors Garrett, McCay, Christiansen, Whitlock, Bogden, Hoban and Whipple voted yes and the motion passed 7-0.
The appropriation was described on the record as an "implied motion" approving the funding; the meeting then adjourned by unanimous consent.
