The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a resolution on Thursday, April 16, endorsing Dr. Ángel Rivera as a nominee for the Region X Superintendent of the Year award.
Sabreana Smith, a district staff member, presented the resolution and asked trustees to sign a nomination package for Dr. Rivera. "I appreciate having the opportunity to be here this morning with all of you, and present a resolution to be signed, to accompany a nomination of our superintendent, Dr. Ángel Rivera, for the Region X Superintendent of the Year," Smith said.
The resolution, read aloud to the board, formally named "Dr. Ángel Rivera, Superintendent of Schools," for "his exemplary and visionary leadership towards improving student performance in our schools," and recorded the meeting date as Thursday, April 16.
A trustee moved to approve the resolution and another trustee seconded the motion. Trustees discussed approving the measure by acclamation rather than a roll-call vote; the presiding officer called for those in favor, noted "Ayes have it" and stated the motion carries.
During discussion a trustee praised Rivera’s approach to leadership and student engagement, saying in part: "You can see how passionate he is about each and every one of those kids... I just think that he represents our district in such a positive light." That trustee also said other districts come to observe Mesquite ISD practices and credited Rivera and his team for innovation on student pathways.
The board thanked Smith and district staff for preparing the nomination materials before adjourning the meeting.
The nomination resolution will accompany the district’s submission to Region X; trustees expressed hope the nomination could advance beyond Region X to the state-level competition.
