Board approves pilot GPA payment for homeless students as part of state program

District staff described program requirements: students must be in grades 10–12, maintain 92% monthly attendance (no more than three absences a month, with some exceptions), and have at least a 2.5 GPA or pass required coursework; students who fall below standards must complete tutoring to regain eligibility. "The requirements is to be at school 92% of the month. So, they can't miss more than three days a month," a district staff member said.
Staff said the program is a pilot in 15 districts, the district currently has nine active students (13 initially identified), and qualifying students receive $500 per month. The program includes supports such as help obtaining birth certificates and bank accounts and provides financial literacy. The board approved the district’s participation by motion and voice vote.
District staff emphasized that eligibility is based on homelessness criteria rather than race or ethnicity; any student meeting McKinney‑Vento criteria may qualify.
