Board approves Nancy Lopez rezoning to fill new school building

The Roswell Independent School District board voted April 14 to expand the Nancy Lopez attendance zone, a rezoning administrators said will bring roughly 100 additional students into the district’s new Nancy Lopez elementary school.
Administration presented maps and demographic analysis and asked the board to approve the change so the new building meets Public School Facilities Authority (PSFA) occupancy expectations. Mr. Sanchez told the board the district’s population trends had shifted since the building was planned and that moving the zone west across Main Street would capture students who currently travel farther to other schools. "This right here would provide an additional 100 kids the opportunity to go to school in a brand new building," he said.
Board members asked whether the receiving school could absorb the enrollment and how the district would communicate with affected families. Staff said they had prepared grade‑level counts, phone numbers and addresses in PowerSchool, planned English and Spanish notices, ClassDojo outreach, and meetings with parents and the board. Principals and transportation staff were expected to coordinate bus routes; administrators said many affected students already ride buses and the district would work with the contractor to adjust service.
The board moved and approved the rezoning by voice vote. Administrators said they would follow up with community meetings, post notices of possible quorums for those sessions, and aim to complete initial outreach within 30 days.
Next steps include targeted family notifications, meetings in English and Spanish, and coordination with the bus contractor and school staff to finalize placements and logistics.
