Acting superintendent reports improved ratings, new attendance dashboards and graduation planning

At the Nov. 20 meeting, the acting superintendent gave the committee three main updates: statewide accountability results, new attendance tools, and graduation planning.
On accountability, the superintendent said Smithfield has four three‑star schools and that Smithfield High School earned a four‑star rating. Pleasant View Elementary was singled out for improvement and is no longer in targeted intervention.
On attendance, the superintendent announced new state‑provided dashboards, including an attendance leaderboard and a calendar heat map that shows daily attendance patterns; she said Smithfield currently has roughly a 10% chronic absenteeism rate, representing about 234 students districtwide, and highlighted Pleasant View as having the district’s lowest chronic‑absence rate at about 5.6%.
On graduation, the superintendent described a process to involve senior class officers, senior class advisors and parents in weighing two venue options (Bryant University and Deerfield Park). Students will receive a presentation about trade‑offs (capacity, weather and cost) and both students and parents will be surveyed; tentative dates identified are June 5–7, 2026, depending on venue and weather. The superintendent said the goal is to let students and families make an informed decision.
Committee members praised the student engagement plan and asked that the process be transparent to families.
